“Morning Song (My Soul will Magnify the Lord)” is a modern folk setting of Mary’s song from Luke 1:46–55 — the Magnificat. Rooted in Scripture and simple acoustic harmony, it celebrates God’s mercy, justice, and faithfulness through the generations. Written in a reflective folk style, it’s easy to sing in worship or quiet devotion alike.
Mary’s words have always spoken deeply to me: her praise rises not from comfort, but from courage and trust in God’s justice. I wanted to give this ancient song a fresh musical voice that invites communities today to join her in singing, “My soul rejoices in my God.”
Morning song (My Soul will Magnify)
(Based on Luke 1:46–55)
Verse 1
My soul will magnify the Lord,
My spirit sings in God my Saviour.
The Mighty One has done great things,
And holy, holy is His name.
Verse 2
He looks with kindness on the poor,
He lifts the lowly from their labour.
The proud are scattered by His hand,
The humble find their peace again.
Chorus
My soul rejoices in my God,
Who breaks the chains of sin and wrong.
He fills the hungry with good things,
His mercy is my morning song.
Verse 3
He keeps the promise made of old,
To Abraham and all his children.
Through every age His love remains,
His mercy flows, it never ends.
Chorus
My soul rejoices in my God,
Who breaks the chains of sin and wrong.
He fills the hungry with good things,
His mercy is my morning song.
Bridge
The world turns ‘round, His kingdom grows,
The mighty fall, the humble know:
That love is stronger than the sword,
And my soul magnifies the Lord.
Final Chorus
My soul rejoices in my God,
Who breaks the chains of sin and wrong.
He fills the hungry with good things,
His mercy is my morning song.
